Hi,

Can GNU/Linux be installed on all laptops that are available in the market?

Or else, tell me which one is the best, so that I can install and use GNU/Linux easily.

I think there should not be any problem on installing Linux on any laptop.
but prefer Laptop with
Nvidia Graphics ( Better drivers than ATI )
Then see all ALSA supported Sound Cards.
AMD or Intel, Wont matter much.

It all depends on the hardware in the laptop.

The most common problem areas are probably wireless cards and webcams.

It also depends on the linux distribution you use. Debian is much more strict about including non-free drivers or firmware in the distro than Ubuntu, so a wireless card might work out of the box in Ubuntu, but require extra steps to get working in Debian.

Also, there is sometimes a lag with new hardware. Drivers in linux are almost always bundled with the linux kernel, so a distro using an older kernel, like Red Hat or CentOS, will not have support for more recent hardware.

Ideally, buy something preinstalled with Linux from a vendor like System76.

Otherwise, there are a lot of resources online to see how various laptops function under linux.

I recommend the Ubuntu 9.10 - Karmic Koala even in its recent version (Beta). BUT, don't check its upgrade command nor its programmed upgradable configurations until the stable version comes out and post here the screens of the harmless error messages to get help, ok?

This week I've migrated to it and, by now, I'm very well impressed by its wonderful performance towards:

- my 3G modem (its easy detection and installation wizard, than the automatic and consistent connection), - of course I checked its automatic connection option and its availability to all users of my notebook (it's a 'Mirax', brazilian inc)
- the plug & play detection, installation and performance of my HP mutifunctional printer,
- got online with Empathy (its chat comunicator) either with my gTalk account or my MSN Messenger (nowadays 'Windows Live') account

I love free software and open source solutions and I allways will ; )
