understandable fax basics (for Dell X300 or other)

This "how to fax from Linux" seems to be a common concern, without simple solutions.
At least I cannot find a simple, understandable set of instructions.

I'll post this here in Laptops. let's see what happens.

I have a Dell X300 laptop. Since overwriting WIndows XP with Ubuntu 9.04, I cannot fax. Nor can I even identify what type of modem I have on this thing (which I expect might be a requirement at some point in the process.)

can anyone direct me to a lay-person-level article or thread that would walk me through getting fax capabilities from this machine?

thank you

Peter

Hello. Can you post the output of
Code:
lspci -v
This is an internal fax/modem we're talking about, right?
