Is there a distro that is generally better for detection of laptop hardware upon the install? Also, will the new kernel have a better collection of drivers for laptop hardware? Thanks for time.

All distros have the same hardware compability ( more or less ), but you could allways check some hardware compability lists, like http://hardware.redhat.com/hcl/ to get a overview of what may work, and what may not..

i have had my laptop which is what im currently using running redhat 9, suse 8.2, slackware 9, and gentoo i had a few little problems with the keyboard but that prolly wouldnt have taken much if i would have had the time to work it out. and that problem happened with both slack and gentoo

SuSe has, as part of their HCL, a list of laptops that are either "ready for" or "certified for" SuSe linux. Also has link telling what test went through to be considered for either one.
