Most of Linux Distros do not support proprietary media formats out of box. You have to install necessary codecs for those.

Which distro are you using?

Install VLC media player or Xine.
You can install those through default Update Manager of RHEL5.

VLC Player will install all necessary codecs and support mp3 and other media formats.

On RHEL 5, you have to setup the DAG RPMFORGE yum repository and then install Xine, VLC or Mplayer. You also need to make sure you install w32codec and libdvdcss.
