I'm not sure, if you can get a distro like muLinux (which fits on one floppy) it might work. It's small thus the kernel is rather old; it uses something like the 2.0 or 2.2 kernel. Otherwise I'm not sure, iirc you can install puppy linux via Floppy too - have a look at these options and see what's best for you.

Alright.
I formatted my [scandisk cruzermini 1gb] pen drive with DSL [USB-HDD.]
Install went fine and my desktop booted from the drive no problem.
So I set the notebook to boot from removable devices... but DSL was skipped, and windows booted.
So I went back and formatted the pen drive with DSL [USB-ZIP.]
Still no dice. Laptop skips right over it and goes windows.

GRRRRRRRR how the heck can I get linux on this machine?!
I googled for BIOS upgrades for the laptop, but found nothing.
What can I do differently?

Hmm, strange, I think you can get a floppy disk which will let you boot USB (I'm not 100% mind, but there is a link to something that boots CD's from floppy in the Linux Newbie part of this forum (see stickies))

If you could do that you could boot up the USB that way.

Note that I've hearn some people say they had to enable some kind of 'legacy' support in the bios to get USB drives to boot.

Otherwise you could try and use something like MuLinux to install Gentoo (I think this should be possible).

Success! [kinda]

I successfully installed Ubuntu 5.10 without any removable media.
I came across this site which led me to instlux.
I followed the directions thru instlux and got ubuntu up and running alongside XP, as well as grub, with zero problems.

I say partial success only cuz I didn't get a distro I was hoping for. I have a proprietory sony CD drive on its way - so ubuntu will be more than fine until then. Thanks to everyone for their help & suggestions.
