Some days ago, I upgraded from Ubuntu 7.10 to Ubuntu 8.04 and everything went smoothly. But, a week later, I changed my computer and preserved only the hard drive. Now, after doing some dpkg-reconfigures (yay to linux, my win partition just died), I can everything work perfectly, except for the internet (that its a hardware problem and not an installation problem, because internet does not work from the Live CD).

I have a ethernet cable connected to a router (that has a light saying that the cable is connected, bu I can't even ping it).

Can't help, but search on google for "sis+191+ubuntu". There are several results that could be potentially useful.

Is there a possibility the network cable is damaged or worn out? I had that happen before and spent a long time installing/removing drivers (Windows) before I replaced the cable and was good to go again.

The cable works perfectly, because I have a Vista partition that, once I installed the drivers of the network card, works perfectly. And, there are many results on google, but that refers to some bug in the older kernel (2.22), while I have a newer one (2.24).

No such thing as hardware problems unless the hardware is physically destroyed. It has to do with either the kernel, modules/firmware, or the software: network manager, ndiswrapper version, etc...

Live-CD should be able to give you Internet if you know what you're doing... and if the kernel, modules/firmware, and software are in alignment. Sometimes a person has to resort to command-line connecting.
