Yes, I've seen that thread. It seems to work for some and not for others. It also works part of the time for some, but not all the time.

Not sure why in either case, though.

Oz, thinking about getting this:

Dell : Netgear GA311 PCI Interface Up to 1000 Mbps Gigabit PCI Adapter. : Network Interface Cards : Home & Home Office

As it is listed on the hardware support components page for the Ubuntu wiki

https://wiki.ubuntu.com/HardwareSupp...rkCardsNetgear

Whatch'a think ?

I'm not familiar with it but netgear makes good products. One reviewer here says it's "not for linux", but you can check out the reviews yourself:

Customer Reviews Of NETGEAR GA311 10/ 100/ 1000Mbps PCI Gigabit Adapter 1 x RJ45 - Retail

Quote:
Not for Linux

Pros: Cheap. Pretends to work, but then...

Cons: Based on the RealTek 8169 chip. The driver in the Linux kernel kind of works, but unreliably. So, RealTek supplies their own tarball source download. Each time I upgraded the kernel, I would rebuild the driver and install it. But, the problem is the driver will not build against the 2.6.24 kernel source. Realtek has yet to address this. Solution: I bought the Intel NIC (offered here at newegg for a great price) to ensure compatibility and reliability.

Other Thoughts: This is not, I suppose, Netgear's fault. It's their chip vendor's. I don't know if this is a GPL thing with realtek's driver, but they seriously need to get with the program.
The r8169 driver is included with modern kernels, so it might work out well for you.

Hope so, anyway.

So, I had the CAT 6 unplugged, using the Macbook for the past couple days, decided to try and plug it back in and reset modem and give it another try for the hell of it. Guess what.. I'm in Ubuntu right now with the on board NIC ! Not sure of what changed, or if this is going to be something tricky I'll have to keep track of, but it's working right now. All I did was plug it back in, BUT, I had the modem off.

So I turned the modem back on (all while Ubuntu was running), then did a network restart via terminal and here I am. (Wake on LAN is off I believe)

Now to fix video issues.

That's good news!

Lots of folks say it works intermittently for them. Even I had it working on one occasion with this new motherboard. On the next reboot, no network again.

Hopefully it will continue to work for you.

Hmm, yeah. Could be something to this. After I did an update, it wouldn't connect again. Then, I wound up borking my video, so I'm back on the Mac now

I'm downloading and going to install hardy, and am going to try Kubuntu, just for the hell of it and see how that goes. If I get grief, I'll resolve to get a new NIC. I think I'm definitely getting a new video card though, for sure.

Yeah, I've already tried Ubuntu 8.04 and 8.10 (alpha2) and neither of them worked with the Realtek controllers for me.

Here's some strange, but great news. I've booted into Kubuntu (latest build 64 bit) several times now and all successfully !

Installed it this morning at around 8:30 (17th, so yesterday morning now I guess) and it detected it straight off the bat. I had to install Kubuntu under safe graphics mode though, else I'd get no installer at all, as was the same for Ubuntu. Not sure of what the hell I did or what happened since this wasn't the case with my first install ?

Anyway, under Kubuntu everything works perfectly ! Video, sound, networking etc.. You might give that a try !

Doug

Edit: Now I just have to figure out how to install Firefox. Conquorer stinks !

Update: Still going strong after hard booting up this morning, so this thing is permanent. Unfortunately still haven't gotten FF installed. Can't complain though.

That good news, Sweet Spot!

Now, some more good news...

The Realtek folks have a released a new driver for the 8111c controller (dated yesterday):

Realtek

I've not had a chance to try it, but I will do so later today.

Hope it works for you.
