Ubuntu recognise NIC - doesn't show up in ifconfig no dhcpcd
I'm using Ubuntu, my ethernet card is connected strait to my cable modem, and here is my problem.

My NIC is showing up as being recognised in the dmesg log:
dmesg | grep -i "eth0" ->
eth0: Realtek at *hex*, *more hex*, IRQ number
eth0: identified 8139 chip type "RTL - 8101"
However, it isn't showing up in ifconfig. What does this meen? Also, I tried running dhcpcd, but it isn't installed on Ubuntu.
Thanks for your help.
