Acer Laptop, Linpus Linux

I've bought an acer laptop that came with Linux ( i think ubunto). When I switcj it on, it starts to boot but everything stops when it gets to this point

>>>Linpus Linux Basic Edition v9.2<<<<<<<

[root@localhost /]#

Anything I type results in Command Not Found.

I've only ever used Windows or OS and I have absolutely no idea what to do, please help!

Well, I have good news and bad news.

The bad news is that I've never heard of Linpus Linux. From what I can tell, it's basically some Chinese or Taiwanese distro that Acer uses.

The good news is that it's not Ubuntu, and Ubuntu is far more user-friendly. Installing Ubuntu should be easy enough: you just need to download it on another computer from:
Download Ubuntu | Ubuntu
Download Desktop Edition 7.04, and choose the proper architecture (probably the first option, unless you have a 64-bit computer, in which case choose the 64-bit option). This will download an ISO file. Use CD burning software to burn it to a CD (Note: do not burn as a data CD. There should be a special option for burning an ISO file).

Take this CD, and put it in the computer you want to install Ubuntu on. When the computer starts, there should be an option to access the Setup menu. Configure the computer to boot from the CD drive before the hard drive. Now, when the computer boots, it will boot from the Ubuntu CD. You can either use it right then to try it out (this is called a LiveCD, and nothing on your computer will be affected), or you can select the "Install Ubuntu" option (or something like that) to install it. The installer is very straightforward.

I hope that this helps you out. Let us know if you have any questions.

Welcome to the forums!

I don't know anything about Linpus, but it appears to be trying to let you login as root user, which is generally not a good thing.

Didn't it come with a manual of some type?

What happens if you type startx, then press enter?

I tried looking at their website, but it appears to be down, at least temporarily.

startx still came up with Command not found.
Unfortunately the manual doesn't mention linux but it did come with a CD so I'll try cubhan's tips on how to access the cd in the first place!

Thanks!!!

Have you been able to get in to the BIOS settings when you switch the computer on? It's usually one of the F keys like F2 or something, that you need to press very shortly after you switch the computer on. Then you can set the boot priority / order.

What have you tried? Chances are, if you just stick in a bootable cd, it'll just work.

As I see it, there are two ways to go at this point. Either you try to get Linpus to work (with some help) or get another distro like Ubuntu.

There is a whole range of things you can try to get some better response from Linpus, before we write it off. But considering you're new to Linux, I strongly suggest trying to burn a copy of Ubuntu, stick it in and (re)boot your system. That is not to say Linpus can't be gotten to work, but you'll have a better chance of getting any help when you try Ubuntu.

And Oh! Wow!
My little google on Linpus gave me a whole range of Acer computers with this distro pre-installed. In Dutch! That may not seem advantageous to the lot of you... but my Dutch is a little better than the average of this board

Anyway, I didn't know that existed! Why didn't anyone tell me? This is... this is... this is.... new![/derail]

Thumbs up

Thank you so much for your help everyone. I realised how to get the cd to boot at 3 am!!! I'll try downloading Ubuntu now as ( sorry Freston ) but my Dutch is non-existent.

I'll probably be back later with another question!!!

I have come across Linpus and problems before. I believe it is text only and has no gui. Have a look at Larko's Blog on linpus « More shameless remarks by Larko. It seems to be a thing which is especially pushed in Finland (?) by verkkokauppa.com

Well I've downloaded Ubuntu and I've started installing it. I've reached the Partition Disk step and I'm not computer literate enough to know which would be the best choice.
