Hi all,

I have used suse linux before but dont really want to format my computer to install linux or partition the drive to have linux and windows. I read that you can downlaod linux and burn it to a cd and run it from the cd without install it on your hard drive. When I had a look at this there were a lot different ones I could download. But I was not sure what the difference was between them all so wanted some advice many thanks.

If you have MS Windows installed already you can use Ubuntu Linux 8.04 without repartitioning anything. Just boot up MS Windows, pop in the Ubuntu disc, and tell it to install inside Windows. It will set up a dual-boot system using the existing NTFS file system and give you the choice at boot time.

If you decide you don't like it, you can remove it using Add/Remove programs in Windows. The performance won't be quite as good as a full dual-boot with repartitioning but it will be significantly faster than running the OS from the LiveCD.

Thanks for that where can I find it ? also what are the difference between all the different version of linux as there seem to be loads ?

I can't possibly tell you the difference between *all* the different versions of Linux. There are quite literally thousands of Linuxes out there. Can you narrow it down to about half a dozen?

errr I understand there are hundreds just really wanted to know why there are so many? is there a lot of difference between them or are they all for different usage?
