That's only true if you use a monolithic kernel. If you use modules, then you'll be fine, because the modules that are not loaded will take no ram.

Maybe the usage isn't really a problem...

Mod_python eats RAM like popcorn. Whereas mod_php uses very little. Would I be better of switching to apache with mod_php and then django through fastcgi?

I did, by the way, switch to Gentoo, for the learning experience of it.

Memory usage is at about 1/2.
