Software for playing Blu-Ray Movies?

Hi all.

Does this exist? I'm thinking of slapping Ubuntu on a system with a Blu-Ray drive and using it with my 52" LCD.

To my knowledge there is no official way to do this yet due to the encryption used on the discs. There is a way around it though it is a little cumbersome and involves ripping the disc first.

You can burn to a BD-R but there is no playback at the moment. I'm pretty sure that'll take a while especaily since its loaded up with sonys crapware DRM.

I had read about this problem last year, and was hoping it still wasn't the case. Guess I was wrong. But I'm sure a player exists for windoze, eh?

Wow...it's just that I installed Ubuntu last week for the first time....and simply fell in love. Unfortunately, I really can't have it on my main system due to a lot of games that I play and engineering software that I use, but on a home theater system...it is simply perfect.

A shame I'm not the only one in my house. Otherwise, I'd go for using Ubuntu for the Blu-Ray with this method. I don't think everyone here will be too willing to dump and play. Hmm....

I'm very knew at this so forgive my ignorance, but the command lines...I'm sure there IS a way to create a desktop shortcut for those, right? Or perhaps even finding someone who has written a small script which automates the entire dumping and playing process?

Well the cool thing with scripts is you just put the commands into a text file with a shabang header like
Code:
#!/bin/bash
It's not as hard as it seems, just a little different. Then you're free to make it executable and create a shortcut. If you have something in mind we'd be glad to help.

Thanks Bigtom! I think I'll order myself the Blu-ray drive and play with it on a lil 1.5ghz PIV system that I have here with a X1600 card. Ubuntu candy should look decent. After I'm comfy with how it looks and with some manual Blu-Ray dumping, then I'll start asking for exact how tos to simplify the process.
