Question encode Quicktime movie clip as mpg video in Lives

Lives 0.9.8.7, Linux 2.6.24.17
How can I encode a Quicktime movie clip "mov" file into a mpg video clip with audio and video in Lives? When I tried to do this, Lives does not encode any of the audio and says that there is "no audio". But, it plays audio under the "preview" option.

Is there a better way to convert the mov file into a standard mpg movie clip?

I use mencoder for almost everything. But I've never used it for mov files. It shouldn't mean any difference, though.

I updated Lives to 0.9.8.12 and it now seems to have audio too when I open a MOV file. There was something wrong with 0.9.8.7 that it would not import the audio. Mencoder seemed to work for converting MOV to mpeg.
