32 vs 64 bit

I saw this sticky (The "Should You Choose 32-bit or 64-bit Linux", I'm not allowed to hyperlink yet ), and saw it's been a year since the last update. Does it still apply now?

There's a recent poll about this in the Coffee Lounge:

Personally, I can't see myself ever returning to 32-bit Linux.

Thanks for reminding me about that thread. Yes, my recommendations are still valid. With one recent exception (Ubuntu 9.04) I'd say that the performance you get out of 64-bit versions of Linux is still equal to that of 32-bit. There are no tangible advantages in that regard, but at the same time you shouldn't have any more problems using 64-bit over 32-bit.

64bit is appropriate if you are going to need more that 3-4 GB of RAM (real or virtual), or if you want to run 64bit clients in virtual machines. I have been running 64bit CentOS (RHEL) 5 for going on 2 years now and have had no problems with it. It will happily run 32bit software as well.

Send a message via MSN to TeoEnMing
I have been installing 64-bit distros without encountering any problems. They are very stable now.
