Can't boot into redhat anymore

I just tried to boot into redhat and the following message appeared instead of the GUI of the Grub bootloader:

Minimal bash-like line editing is supported. For the first TAB list possible command completions. Anywhere else TAB lists the possible completions of a device/filename

grub >

When I press enter I get a list of commands. The one that made most sense was boot but when I entered that command it said something about the kernel not being loaded.

This machine dual boots with XP and gets used a lot by my 4 year old so I don't know what he might have done. He has a tendecy to shut it down whenever something is not working.

I don't have a boot disk for red hat. Any suggestions?

Cheers

Have you done anything at all to your hardware? At the GRUB prompt, try these and see what they return:
Code:
find /grub/grub.conf
find /boot/grub/grub.conf
Also, what partitions do you have?

find /grub/grub.conf returns (hd0,5)

find /boot/grub/grub.conf returns error 15:file not found

I have one drive that has

NTFS partition (C:\)
NTFS partion (D:\)
Linux patitions
NTFS partion (F this one was (hd0,6)when I used to access ot from linux in the past.

I don't know if there is a grub command I can use to get this info?

I did not add any hardware but there is a modem in the box that was playing up.

Cheers[/img]

What happens if you run the following?
Code:
configfile (hd0,5)/grub/grub.conf

After entering that command I get to see the following:

booting red hat linux (2.4.20-
root(hd0,6)
filesystem type is ext2fs, partition type 0x83
kernel /vmlinuz-2.4.20-8 ro root=label=/hdc=ide-scsi

Error 15 file not found

Press key to continue....

After doing that I see the grub boot loader but in black and white and it is covered by lots of vertical lines. I can still toggle between Linux and Dos.
Dos works. Linux send me to the message above.

cheers

You're crazy, andutt... You know that? How can you possibly advertize LILO before GRUB?

Anyway, pay no attention to that maniac, Allblack. Try running these commands instead:
Code:
kernel (hd0,5)/vmlinuz-2.4.20-8 ro root=label=/ hdc=ide-scsi
boot
If that doesn't work, try this and see what it returns:
Code:
find /vmlinuz-2.4.20-8

Code:
kernel (hd0,5)/vmlinuz-2.4.20-8 ro root=label=/ hdc=ide-scsi
boot
This returns error 15 : file not found

Code:
find /vmlinuz-2.4.20-8
This one returns (hd0,5)

cheers

Are you sure that you spelt it right? If you did, your boot partition must have gotten corrupted somehow. I can't understand how that would have happened, but nontheless it seems like it. Try using the CDs to enter rescue mode and run fsck on it.

Oops. I did not spell it right.

This is what I get after the first command

Code:
[linux-bzimage, setup = 0x1400, size 0x10f646]
I enter boot and it looks like it starts up but I can see the following errors:

Code:
vfs:cannot open root device "label/" or 00:00
please append a correct "root=" boot option
kernel panic vfs:unable to mount root fs 00:00
cheers
