help... I can't change any of my system settings

I can't change any of my system settings. I get an "unknown error" message. I can't do this as root. I had changed some permissions of files in the /etc directory, but I have changed them back (I thought).

Any ideas as to why this might be happening and how to fix.

I'm using Red Hat v. 9

thanks.

Karen

I'm working in the gui and when I go into start here/system settings I can't access ANY of what is listed. From Add/Remove applications to users and groups.

The error message is simply "unknown error".
