./configure permissions denied when in root?

when im in root trying to do ./configure no a xchat script. it gives me this

bash-2.05b# ./configure
bash: ./configure: Permission denied
i had tryed it both in root and out. and in the readme it does tell me to run ./configure. so whats the problem here?
bmxface is offline

that should solve it..
