klibido install problem: dependency for uudeview, alrady installed

I am trying to install a program called klibido. I am pretty much a n00b of one week, I spent all last night trying to figure out what to do until sunrise.

I am running SuSE 9.3 Evaluation and when I attempt to install the klibido usenet downloader program, I get a dependency error that says that I need uudeview. However, I have already *installed* uudeview. I have checked and uudeview is set for permissions execute.

uudeview is in two direcotories, and I am wondering if somehow where they default install to is where the problem is. They installed to usr/bin directory in one attempt, and in another, I don't know which, to usr/local/bin.

The install instructions on the uudeview site leave me a little confused, what with how they use a term "DIR" where this is the site:

http://www.fpx.de/fp/Software/UUDevi...tall-Unix.html

And this is the line in question:

--prefix=DIR

I don't know if they mean that DIR is a variable that I have to previously apply a value to, and if so, how I do it. I am also confused by the bind method of controlling where the file goes to.

In any event, I have no idea if this is where my problem is, all I know is that SuSE 9.3 Evaluation, the Distro I am using, reports that it has a conflict and requires uudeview to install klibido. I have also tried using guru's rpms to solve the problem. No luck.

I can only ask for some hand holding here, I have asked for help in a few other forums and no body is taking on this problem, which I can understand, but I really need this program, or one like it, a newsgroup file grabber that supports yEnc (oh that pesky yEnc, good to use, a pain to deal with).

Could someone please help guide me on what to do, please? I am new to Linux commands and syntax and permissions. I am not even sure if a chmod is required, and if so, what the syntax would be and how I would use it.

I am poor so I can't afford to buy a book on SuSE 9.3 yet, I live off of very little.

The problem with traditional package managers is if you install something outside of that package manager (like compiling from source), it isn't considered when calculating dependencies. You should either check the box in YaST that says Ignore (there should be one when the error window pops up) or install uudeview via RPM.

Well, that worked, until I messed up and tried to uninstall it. The program wasn't acting right, so I tried retyping the news server info and ended up with a duplicate listing. I decided to uninstall the program to start fresh and it would stop the uninstall while checking dependencies, it would just drop off and do nothing and stay in the YaST window.

So I hand installed using the rpm command and got it back up, but every time I try to see the newsgroup list, it shuts down *suddently* and crashes.

There is a "patch" at the website for klibido, could someone tell me how I install it, as I am totally unfamiliar with adding code to an install, thanks.

Here is the site, you will see the reference to the patch

http://klibido.sourceforge.net/

TIA!

it is most likely a patch to install to a source tree not the rpm

You need to download the source tree and apply the patch to it.

Ok, so I copy that text of the patch, and put it last in the code before compiling, yes? What file would I put it in, or is the source file just one big single file...

He doesn't say where that coding goes into the source and I don't want to mess up a loop or something in the source code, so any suggestions on how to apply it to source?

Please pardon my questions, just trying to learn...

No. You decompress the source tree, and use the "patch" program to apply it. See:
Code:
man patch
for more details.
