Ubuntu not detection onboard sound

Hi

AM running Ubuntu (Dapper) and recently installed an X-Fi sound card only to find there were no drivers.

I have left the soundcard in but 'enabled' the onboard sound on my Asus A8N-E mobo and enstalled the latest Nvidia audio drivers.

The problem is that i have no sound and there is no sound card at all that is selectable in the system sound gui

I am pretty sure the drivers are loaded ok but does it matter if they were loaded as root or not?
