Rar is propietary, which means most distros (include FC) will not come with it by default. I know Debian offers two different rar packages, a free implementation and the actual rar on the non-free repo. I bet Fedora has something like that, but like I said doesn't install it by default.

    Getting RAR for Linux

    .................................................. .
I needed RAR for LINUX some while ago, and found tar.bz2 file to download on
vnunet.com. I don't know how good it is, haven't had time to look. The raw utility
to unpack rar files may also be in LZMA.

The command set might depend on the fron end that you use. I plan to use krusader,
which at the moment complains about absence of unrar.

Lookin in Google under "Linux rar" turned up a whole lot of entries, mostly about WINRAR, which I don't use because I have a consulting contract that forbids use of any WINDOWS software. This doesn't bother me, I've been a LINUX user since a little before R1.0 of the kernel, and 4.2 BSD before that.

However, I'm 75 years old, and slowly going blind so I can't indulge in any extensive correspondence. So, I'd be grateful if you could keep emails short and infrequent.

But, I've worked with computers since 1956, and I still remember how lonely it be as a newbie. I worked as a theoretical physicist since be before 1956. That was VERY lonely in New Zealand.

I wish you all the best. If I find anything useful, I'll let you know.

    Sincerely
    John Gabriel

Just search for rar and unrar packages.

You should also be aware that in Linux, everything is case sensitive. The command "Man RAR" will give you an error: the proper command is "man rar".

    RAR for Linux

I unpacked several rar utilities, and tried to compile them.

The best two for LINUX seem to be:-

krusader-1.70.1 A GUI front end, w/ good docs from KDE.
rarlinux-3.3.0 Provides rar to pack, and unrar to unpack

Use both. Install to /usr/bin or /usr/local/bin (/usr/local needs edits or args to makefile
in order to set install dest). Tested on Fedora FC-5 i386. Both compiled w/o trouble.

Some people may also need djvulibre-3.5.17 to convert djvu files after unrar to PDF.

These utilities can be found by search on Google under "linux rar" and "linux djvu."

djvu is at present untested. I use these utilities to retrieve books from http://ihtik.lib.ru.

They have an enormous collection, law, zoology, physics, mathematics, and probably many others. Most are of couse in russian, but about 200 each are in math and physics.
I haven't done a survey, but I think most of the collection is for graduate students though I would expect callic level 101 books like Timoshenko's on stress and strain to be somewhere in engineering or applied math. And I think these have been used for 101
courses at MIT since shortly after they were published by Dover in English some 40 or 50 years ago. I'd expect their literature to be world wide and extensive.

Anyway I was able to obtain books in English, some of which were out of print here in the US, or expensive, for only my cost to laser print them, about 2500 pages or more.

I'd be interested to hear from anybody else who uses the collection.

    Sincerely

    Cool Hmm

I think some people swayed off a topic a bit.
Eitherway, man rar won't get you anywhere.
    Try following:
get the proper rar for ur distro.
    1. gunzip file
    2. tar -xf blah.tar
    3. cd rar (rar being dir where it was uncompressed)
    4. make (type that)
    5. *Optional type: rar --help (instead of man rar or if man rar wont work)
