09-15-2006 #2Simply speaking, you can't do that. A debian package (DEB) is a precompiled and specially configured binary install file, whereas a TAR.GZ archive is usually uncompiled source code. You can convert RPM files to DEB using alien, but not TAR.GZ.

Hi !!
i dont think you can convert tar.gz to .deb......
tar.gz is a set of zipped files... .deb is debian's binary package.....
you can convert .rpm to .deb through 'alien'
EDIT : you are quick techieMoe...
.... casper ....It is amazing what you can accomplish if you do not care who gets the credit.

There is a little app that can help you do that : checkinstall.
Here you can download the package for Dapper :
http://archive.ubuntu.com/ubuntu/poo...pper1_i386.deb
Or you can get "apt-get" it (from the universe repository) :
Here is an example on how to use it :Code:sudo apt-get install checkinstall
http://www.falkotimme.com/howtos/checkinstall/
Or a step by guide specific for checkinstall on Ubuntu :

Some more ressources about compiling in Ubuntu :
