    converting .tar.gz archive to .deb


    I am using Ubuntu 6.06 (am a super n00b)....just wanna know what is the command to convert a tar.gz archive into .deb ?( I have alien app.)

    please explain in depth

    Simply speaking, you can't do that. A debian package (DEB) is a precompiled and specially configured binary install file, whereas a TAR.GZ archive is usually uncompiled source code. You can convert RPM files to DEB using alien, but not TAR.GZ.

    Hi !!

    i dont think you can convert tar.gz to .deb......
    tar.gz is a set of zipped files... .deb is debian's binary package.....

    you can convert .rpm to .deb through 'alien'

    EDIT : you are quick techieMoe...

    There is a little app that can help you do that : checkinstall.

    Here you can download the package for Dapper :
    http://archive.ubuntu.com/ubuntu/poo...pper1_i386.deb

    Or you can get "apt-get" it (from the universe repository) :

    sudo apt-get install checkinstall

    yeah...i have alien....so for eg;I have an archive ntfs-3g-20060714-1.guru.suse101.src.rpm then what should be the command to be entered in the terminal

    its a source rpm (.src.rpm)... you can't convert it easily... check this link for ntfs-3g
