Can Linux be used for creating commercial software

I have a legal compiler able to run on linux, and want to create a software, which later will be for sale. In this case can I use Linux legally as a free operation system on which to install the compiler? If I can, which distributions can I use? Thanks in regards.

Yes and No..

Its Legal untill you change the Kernel.
If you change the Kernel you have to make that Change Open.
So, Basicly aslong as all the software you make is not using any software thats under GPL.

Hope that helps.

Cheers,
Robin

ps.
The TiVo runs Linux

Welcome to the forums!

You can use Linux for pretty much anything you want as long as you don't violate any licensing agreements. A Linux distribution can have packages in it using a number of different licensing agreements.

You should check GNU.org for more information on Linux license agreements.

Oops... Robin is pretty fast today!

So, what Linux distribution is suitable for making software that is for sale? May I use any version of Linux if I make only software, that do not change the Linux itself (At least this I understood from the first reply to me)? Thanks again for the answers.

You should be able to write software with just about any version of Linux, because you can add any of the available programming applications, as needed. If you aren't interested in lots of eyecandy, you should probably stay away from the bloated distros and perhaps go with a distro that allows you to install the base system, then just whatever applications you really want/need, like Arch, Debian, Gentoo, etc. Just my opinion, of course.
