Smile How to conceal my IP address

I have a machine, a server, with an IP address as normal. I want to make it as invisible as possible to the outside world, but I need access to the web and to one or two remote sites.

Can this be done? If my machine's IP address is not visible, would that make my machine hacker-proof? Is there a quick way of checking how hacker-proof my machine is or not?

Any other tips, especially regarding firewalls, would be welcome. But please put things in real simple terms -- I am a beginner with RHEL WS 4.0.

Cheers.

Send a message via MSN to Tim_Wright
You may like to look at JAP (do a google search for it) although it may not totally meet your specifications.

Need any more help? Ask!

It's a little unclear what you are looking for, but you probably want to look at Tor ( http://tor.eff.org/ ). You can read about how it works on the website. If you wish to set up a server without revealing your IP address you can run a Tor hidden service (also on the website).

If in addition to routing all traffic through Tor, you set up a firewall with rules to filter all incoming connections, and to ignore ICMP ping requests, I would say that would make you pretty "invisible".

On a side note... if you want to support the Tor project you can consider running a Tor server to relay connections.

Hope that helps.
