HP 640C Deskjet printer; Creative labs' NX-Pro Web Camera. I have only dial up connection for internet.
I also want to know whether I would be able to watch movies on vcds (invariably prepared under windows O.S. environment). How about copying vcds, audio cds on CD-R/CD-RW disks? such as provided by Nero 6.0 under windows. How is the CD-R /CD-RW burning facility- for data as well as multimedia purposes?
regards and happy new year to all.

Looks pretty normal.
Shouldn't be any problem with the printer and CUPS...
Totem does vcds as do other (Linux) DVD/Movie players.
If you have any trouble w/ the modem, try the wvdial program. You probably won't but when I first started using MDK some years back wvdial made setup & use of the Diamond 56kbps external modem much easier.
The web camera is usable but I have no info on how much/little -it might work perfectly! I have a Vista Vicam, which at last check does not really work in Linux... (Vista is really, um, "stubborn" about releasing any drivers or info for *nix)
I have watched both original and (personal)backup copies of DVD movies on my DVD/CD-R/RW player/recorder and they looked GREAT!

You can visit
http://www.mandrakelinux.com/en/hardware.php3
for specific HW info but, like that other OS, not being listed does not necessarily mean it is not going to work. ( The database is not complete.)

You might have a steep learning curve but all the DVD/CD software is available to do whatever...

Mandrakelinux started as a Redhat clone, sortof, ... anyway, they are a LOT alike. I have known of many who could run MDK but not RH( and some vice-versa too ).

Many thanks for the help.

Hi there,

Enjoyed reading your article as I am looking at getting a broadband connection and using Mandrake 10.1 Official for browsing and online research. A pleasure to read and I'm sure you'll agree, this is a very good distro these days! Can't wait to finally try Firefox as I've heard so many good reports.

I find it very interesting how Jeremy had managed to set the Hard drive on his Compaq Armarda m700. I have one and there is no option whatsoever in the bios to set this.

Thus I am unable to install Mandrake onto my laptop! Any help on setting LBA in the bios would be appreciated.

Great Review

I was also fustrated by MSFT and their so called "most reliable OS ever" so I decided to try this MDK distro, I gotta say, its been great, so great that i reformatted my hd and went all out with mandrake linux. No more Winblows for me. I also use VMWare for emulation so i can use Win xp for those progs and games that wont run on linux. I hardly ever virtual boot windows tho., and i dont think msft will get my money ever again.

Justice

You have really done Mandriva Linux justice with this review. I use Mandriva 2005 LE and am immensely satisfied with it.
