There is Plenty of Blame To Go Around: The Facts and Fiction

There is Plenty of Blame To Go Around: The Facts and Fiction Around Windows Security
Microsoft has taken alot of heat for the security issues that surround its Windows operating systems, but they should not be the only ones taken the heat for Windows security. There are other parties out there that deserve to shoulder some of the blame with Microsoft. This editorial, originally written for a Communication Security course, tries to take an objective view of who is exactly to blame for what in the perceive mess that is Windows security.

This article covers a minefield of "security" issu

The following sentence illustrates just how difficult it is to address the issue objectively:

As the maker of Windows XP, Microsoft has the responsibility to supply its costumers with a quality and secure product, at least in the minds of Windows XP users.

This makes no sense... or, alternatively, it means nothing (and by that, I am not trying to make a cynical comment about XP customers' minds), or, alternatively, it means that Microsoft are intentionally creating a userbase of misinformed, naiive junkies.
The heat that Microsoft is now weathering is a consequence of their attitude earlier on in the industry. If you boast that your <insert product here> is the best, and it isn't, then be prepared for criticism, backlash, consequences. And when you have a huge userbase, you'll have it's contingent of blind followers, and they'll follow the noisier convincingly-spoken anti-MS protagonists, just like they followed you, when you boasted so convincingly. What that means is, while a lot of the heat they're copping now is warranted, a lot of it is just noise.

If microsoft were a car manufacturer how many people would be dead now? Would the government stepped in to stop them? You bet. They sell an inferior product and get away with it because they are number one and almost only. And that is all they care about. Making money and being number one. Where is the public outcry? If you are using microsoft and continue to use it then complain to the company, switch to another os, or shut up. Plain and simple. And as for microsoft "to who much is given, much is expected".

however, it is true that people should take more interest in securing there systems. i'm no MS lover but if a person has there details stolen and they made no attempt to protect their computer then i cannot see the law taking their side. it's just like not locking the door to your house: if someone then burgles it you have no right to claim on the insurance as you did not take any basic precautionary measures. on the other hand, MS should also push internet security harder. they could consider deals with anti-virus companies to have software pre-installed and encourage people to update it. news channels should also tell people to update the anti-virus software. it has to be a group effort from all sides. then, when someone doesn't protect their system they have no right to complain when they end up on charge for internet crimes, they knew the score.
