Handheld Linux machine

Some of you might be interested in the 'Simputer' which is intended for poor people in India. I wouldn't mind one myself

The question is, would you buy one of these?

Just by reading the article there is not enough detail to tell if you have cmd shell, any add on's, memory, storage space etc...

It could be decent or just linux with the user locked out from the OS in a gui shell. i.e. just like the Palm and Visor products.

It also doesn't mention if the Internet access includes a provider or not, any need of add on hardware module, and the cost of each.

Next is the cost issue. About every 3 months or so there are close out sales in U.S with new PC's that are no longer being made for $299. There not the latest or always advertised but include alot more that any hand held device could.

So it would really need to be compared to a Palm or Visor product and cost vs features to be fair. It's not even a fair comparison to a used 3 year old PC for less than $200 that I could get now.

I'm not up to speed on current price and features of Palm/Visor devices so I'll leave that to someone else to comment on.

It looks very interesting, but the Zaurus by Sharp runs Linux natively and can pretty much run any distro that you want to put on it. They also have an integrated QWERTY keyboard. Pretty nice stuff.
