this isnt really _linux_ news, unless ms *****es about vfat accessibliilty. But its coz digital cameras etc use fat as their fs coz its simple to make work etc. and last i heard all camera manufacturers were having to pay ms money.

It just applys to FAT not FAT16/32 and no one uses FAT anymore appart from camaras, mp3 players etc.. and as said above it will just be added to the cost of these devices. So there is nothing to worry about.

however if the FAT patent falls by the way side then they can proceed to the FAT16/32 patents... wich is probably the real goal.
