First troubles

I have 2 serious problems with Mandriva 2008 Spring:
1. Audacity 1.3.4 simply won't work with my Audigy2 soundcard. I've tried older versions but with little success and long delay.
2. Although I have 2.67GHz processor and 1.5GB of DDRAM, I cannot find a normal low latency kernel for audio-recording. I've tried so far the kernel-multimedia-2.6.17, the kernel-mm-2.6.23 and kernel-rt. I only had some kind of success with the first one. I could use it with 3 stereo channels. Of course with scrapings and side noises. Any ideas?

P.S: I have no good experiences with audio under Linux. I have a stallion of PC, and it works like a donkey. I would like to have at least 6 stereo channels without xruns and noises. I feel ashamed to admit that I've recorded over 10 stereo channels with Nuendo under XP with only 512MB of RAM. It's a pity.

Hi - Which sound server are you using? ALSA probably provides the best support. The ALSA website includes a database of sound cards, and shows which ones have the best support.

Well, I solved the second part of the problem. I'm using the kernel-multimedia 2.6.17-3 for Mandriva 2007, and it works fine. The Audacity is still a problem. I'm testing some older versions, but no solutions so far. It looks like it will work but only with oss. I'm scared about PulseAudio, and basically about all the new programs. There are no good HowTos for them and experimenting is painfull.
Now I can record 7 stereo tracks, still with minimal xruns, but without noises.
I hope the final kernel versions would solve totally the problem. I don't know why is so hard to have an all in one kernel for all purposes? MS have succeeded in it.

Audacity 1.3.4 problem

I'm brand new to Linux (kubuntu gutsy, if that helps) so please bear that in mind when replying. I have Audacity 1.3.4 installed and it works fine... to a point. I can record one track using a cheap mic plugged into my laptop and add every effect to this track. Really cool stuff and it all works just fine. But when I go to lay down a harmony track I keep getting an error message that the program can't identify the input device. Huh? It just recorded using the same mic. I tried changing the input device to all three of the available options with the same results. The box is checked in "preferences" to allow the first track to play through while recording the second. I also read through the Audacity manual on line and found nothing there addressing this issue. Any ideas?
