Pre-install backup

Hi all,
I have just got my copy of Mandriva powerpack 2008 spring edition. I intend to install this on my laptop now running 2007.0 free edition. My plan is to backup my home dir to a different computer. Then boot the system with system rescue cd (and use partimage I think it is) and make a complete harddrive image to an external device. Now this backup is just incase it all turns to custard when I install so I hope not to restore things from this backup, but it is a "soft landing" plan. Now would this work? Do I need to do more? like backup the boot sector?

B.t.w I plan on doing a re-install not an "upgrade". Any advice is greatly appreciated.

PartImage will take care of everything, including Boot Sector. It creates bootable images and it will be easy to re-install from the same.
