root user is disabled in Ubuntu by default and its not a good idea to enable it.
What the output of startx command?

Hi Casper...sorry for the delay...was away....I have tried the "startx" cmd...this is what happens...

xinit:Connection reset by peer (error 104):
unable to connect to X server
xinit:No such process (error 3): server error.
