jre1.6 install

Mandriva 2007 and Firefox 2.0.1. I have downloaded the java jre1.6.0 rpm and installed it. When I try to to run Sun's verify program, Firefox quits without any messages. According to documentation a symbolic to the libjavaplugin_oji.so file should be what is needed. When I rm the link, Firefox operates properly sans JRE.
Help!

Welcome to the forums!

Run firefox from the command line and let us know what the output is when it crashes.

I think I may have a permissions issue. The message is:

INTERNAL ERROR on Browser End: Could not get the plugin manager
System error?:: Success

Running from root session, I still get the same error. What am I missing?
I did follow Sun's instructions.
