you can create symlink ( shorcuts ) through 'ln' command.
Code:
ln -s <path of sims package> ~/Desktop/sims

just tried what you said and got the following error
[john@localhost ~]$ ln -s <path of sims package> ~/Desktop/sims
bash: path: No such file or directory
[john@localhost ~]$ su
Password:
[root@localhost john]# ln -s <path of sims package> ~/Desktop/sims
bash: path: No such file or directory
[root@localhost john]#

you should 'type' actual path of sims binary file.
i assume that package name is 'sims'. execute this
Code:
which sims
this will display the path of sims pacakge. mostly its /usr/bin/sims.
now create symlink
Code:
ln -s /usr/bin/sims ~/Desktop/sims

ln -s /usr/bin/sims ~/Desktop/sims
