hello frends,

ive used Fedora core 4 and Ubuntu 6.06 versions till now,

im presently using ubuntu,

ive heard a lot of this Mandriva linux...
infact i heard it as Mandrake Linux,

i want to know about this mandriva linux,
wat versions of it are the recommended ones...


pls jus dont ask me to try the live cd and decide,
think me as a new bie, but for sure will learn things sooner,

will i get that version for free, .. if not how much will it cost
ive seen their site... all those power packages... all those..
i dint undersatnd them.. so asking for suggestions from you people

please mention them in detail. plzzz..

Mandriva and Mandrake are not the same thing, however they are different versions of Linux that were distributed by the same company. Mandrake no longer exists and I do not recommend you download any version of it. The company that released Mandrake now releases the newer distribution: Mandriva. The most recent version is 2007, which can be found here:

http://www.mandriva.com/en/download

The Mandriva "Power Pack" is not free, but it doesn't really offer anything different than the free versions. You can tell which one you're downloading by the name of the ISO file. The free version will say FREE somewhere in its name.

I recommend the latest version, Mandriva 2007. If you have a fast internet connection, download the version that takes up 4 CDs. If you have a slower connection, download the 1 CD version. Both versions are available for download on the website I provided above.

Basically the box. When you buy the "PowerPack" editions you get a profesionally-printed manual, discs and some sort of official support from the Mandriva company that allows you to either email them or call a number for help with things.

This means that if you want the Free version, look for the word FREE. On the website I linked for you above, the names of the free versions are as follows:

Mandriva One
Mandriva Linux Free

Both of those are free. Click on the download links inside those sections and you will get the free version of Mandriva.
