Log out, Press Alt+Ctrl+F1 and Log in command line mode.
    Execute this
    Code:
    shutdown -h now
Does it throw any error message?
It is amazing what you can accomplish if you do not care who gets the credit.

    Hey,
Run the following command through terminal / console mode:-
    #poweroff
Post the output if error occurs.
