i had a problem trying to connect as well but then i was trying to use my phone as a modem via cable lsusb would detect it and the setup network on mcc but to no avail kppp kept crashing so i ended up using wvdial worked great still works

As a general guide, a lot of ISPs provide usb modems with their broadband contracts. These can be a pain to set up as far as I can tell, and you're better off with a DSL router / modem. Mine is wired, but I think wireless solutions are just as valid.
It's worth having a basic setup to start with and trying from there. Once you've got yourself connected (entering details like DNS servers, account passwords) you should be fine.
There are several things which could act as a barrier to your connection. For example, incorrect settings in /etc/modprobe.conf or even default Firefox settings.
Getting connected with any modern distro isn't too hard these days, but it's perhaps not always an intuitive process at first.I am always doing that which I can not do, in order that I may learn how to do it. - Pablo Picasso
