How to remove locked icons on desktop
I just installed adobe acrobat reader. and when i tried to access it from the menu, it appeared on the desktop, with a lock on it. and i cant seem to delete it. it appears twice on the menu, i cant edit that either. it says in the properties, owned by root. even if i type my root password, that still keeps me from editing it. when i go to the terminal, it says cannot set lc all no such file exists.
what should i do?
many thanks.

Try using konqueror with kdesu. Start konsole, then type this command:
enter root password when requested.Code:kdesu konqueror
Then use the newly opened konqueror with root permissions to navigate to the icons and see if you can delete them.
Let us know if it doesn't work.Last edited by oz; 09-02-2007 at 04:21 AM. Reason: spelling

In Gnome, you can try gksu.
Open a terminal and type:
I think that's correct, but not sure. Try it and if the filemanager opens, you can navigate to the icons and hopefully, delete them.Code:gksu nautilus

i did it, thanks. did what you said, but went into nautilus instead, and found my folder where the icons were unlocked, and into the trash they went.

thanks for the offer, and i will immediately take you up on it. i still do have a problem with permissions. im trying to empty the trash, there are a couple of folders, again, locked, which means i cant delete it, and when i try to delete the files inside, it says i have no permission to modify parent folder. these are windows files, which, i actually dont know how they got into my linux partition. thanks again.

Is this a new Mandriva install, or is it one you've been using for a while?
If it's new, it sounds like it didn't install correctly. Maybe a reinstall would help.oz
