kde and me just aren't working... I miss gnome. The package manager says it's installed, but it's not a selection in the sessions menu at login??? How do I configure/use it?

Are you using Mandriva? That's what I understand by the forum you posted it in. In Mandriva, what package manager are you using? URPMI? Should be. That's what I recall since I used Mandriva.
Here's what you have to do:
1. From the 'Find' field, select Package Groups.
2. Search for GNOME.
3. Uninstall all selected packages. Then reboot:
4. Run URPMI again. Repeat steps 1 - 2.Code:sudo shutdown -r now
5. Select all packages and select install.
6. No reboot is required. Just end your session and select GNOME from the logon options.
