Red face Mandriva Linux 2008 - How to install VLC player with all codecs?

    Hello,

I am a new user, having trouble installing VLC and make it work for me. Could someone tell me what's the easiest way to install VLC and all codecs to make it play everything its capable of?
(I am using Mandriva Linux 2008.)

    Many thanks,
    A. Malik

Go to easyurpmi and setup the various main, contrib, updates and plf repos. After that start the GUI software manager and search for vlc, libdvdcss and win32-codecs.

sorry budman for posting at the wrong place (Just couldn't see Mandriva's section)

    @dark child!
I added all those repos using easy urpmi. But when I select VLC, I see this message!

Sorry, the following package cannot be selected:

    - vlc-0.8.6c-3plf2008.0.i586 (due to unsatisfied libebml.so.0)

What do you think could be the possible solution to this?

    Cheers,
    Malik

    Try entering the commands
    Code:
    #uprmi.update -a
    #urpmi libebml
    #urpmi vlc
    Post back any error messages

    Hello daark.child,

First command seems to be ok, however, here is the out put of others!

    # urpmi libebml
    No package named libebml
    # urpmi vlc
A requested package cannot be installed:
    vlc-0.8.6c-3plf2008.0.i586 (due to unsatisfied libebml.so.0)
Probably I am a missing a repo, what do you say?

    Cheers!

    Try
    Code:
    #urpmi libebml0
If you have the contrib repo for Mandriva 2008, then libebml should be installed. You can also download it from here.

    Hello again,

I installed VLC, win32-codecs, libdvdcss sucessfully.
But whenever I open a video file with VLC it shuts down itself in a second. How to fix?

    Many thanks,
    Malik

Start VLC from a terminal emulator like Konsole, open a video file and post back the error message that gets printed on the screen.

    i've got the same problem

    Hi everyone!

i've got the same problem as BrokenWings, when i try to run VLC, it seems that it's gonna open but it closes in less than a sec.

Running from Konsole, i got an output like:

    (......)
    b7f14000-b7f23000 rwxp 001a8000 03:48 483521 /usr/lib/libvlc.so.0.0.0

    b7f33000-b7f34000 rwxp 00000000 03:48 637695 /usr/lib/vlc/video_chroma/libi420_ymga_plugin.so
    b7f34000-b7f37000 r-xp 00000000 03:48 474502 /usr/lib/libgmodule-2.0.so.0.1400.1
    b7f37000-b7f38000 rwxp 00002000 03:48 474502 /usr/lib/libgmodule-2.0.so.0.1400.1
    b7f38000-b7f3f000 r-xs 00000000 03:48 473636 /usr/lib/gconv/gconv-modules.cache

    b7f5a000-b7f5b000 rwxp 00019000 03:48 718093 /lib/ld-2.6.1.so
    bfef5000-bff09000 rwxp bfef5000 00:00 0 [stack]
    bff09000-bff0b000 rw-p bff09000 00:00 0
    ffffe000-fffff000 r-xp 00000000 00:00 0 [vdso]
    Aborted
    ------------

But the point is that the output isn't always the same, i also get for example:

    (......)
    am_out_bridge_plugin.so
    b5086000-b5087000 rwxp 00002000 03:48 637681 /usr/lib/vlc/stream_out/libstream_out_bridge_plugin.so

    b508b000-b508c000 rwxp 00003000 03:48 637691 /usr/lib/vlc/stream_out/libstream_out_switcher_plugin.so
    b508c000-b508f000 r-xp 00000000 03:48 637688 /usr/lib/vlc/stream_out/libstream_out_mosaic_bridge_plugin.so
    b508f000-b5090000 rwxp 00002000 03:48 637688 /usr/lib/vlc/stAborted
By the way, i'm also on Mandriva2008.
Thanks in advance for any help
