Red face I have ended up with a really funky menu

I am trying out Mandriva One 2008 and so far really like it. However,
I did something and ended up with a really funky menu with different tabs
    and even a search bar.

I think I like the menu, but would love to know how I switched it on!

Right click the KDE Menu Button (Star button) select between different menu styles.

    There it is ....

I have no recollection of doing that.. Is there a keyboard shortcut?

The menu style you are using right now is called "Kickoff Menu Style", if you right click the menu button and select "switch to KDE Menu style", you will get your old menu back.
If you want to switch back to this tabbed style again repeat the same procedure and select "Switch to Kickoff menu style".

Another way is to open "Menu" go to "Applications" tab and then "tools", there you will find "Menu Style configuration"

Please don't get me wrong, I like the "kickoff" menu. I just didn't know how
    I turned it on

Computers, alcohol and sitting in front of the telly...

Now I know where it is, I can say "... and then I do this ..."
