Hello all,

I have an HP dv5115nr notebook, and have not been able to get online with my wireless in Ubuntu, OpenSuse, or Mandriva. Mandriva says that it does issue the proprietary software to run the wireless, but I couldn't get online with Firefox (which is what I use in Windoze 98 and XP). I don't know what to do at this point, except go with Pista on my next computer at this rate. What can I do? I'm so frustrated that I don't even know the right question to ask. Whan the OS tells me to go online to get the firmware, but I can't even get online with the OS, it seems like the greatest catch-22 ever.

Can you use a wired ethernet connection to get online to troubleshoot?

Even with Windows, if you don't have a driver for the wireless, you'd need to use a wired connection or something like a USB memory stick to transfer the driver onto the laptop. That's the same approach I'd take here...

What *is* the wireless card? Many people are having great results using the *Windows driver* in Linux with ndiswrapper.

There are basically 4 kinds of wireless cards:
1. Working with a built-in kernel module
2. Working with the ndiswrapper
3. Working with the madwifi-driver (Atheros)
4. Not working at all.

It seems that you are using a broadcom chipset. Just to be sure open a terminal and type as root

lspci

Yes, it is a broadcom. I remember that. I think a lot of the AMD HPs have that one. If I figure out how to do it with ndiswrapper, doesn't that mean that Windows has to remain on the computer? I was hoping to learn linux enough over time to be able to liberate myself from that.

Isn't there some driver file that could be burned onto a cd in Windows, and then installed on the linux side?

SimplyMepis and Sabayon will configure out of the box.
I have not been able to find the driver that you will need to use with ndiswrapper.
