    cant install mandriva

hi there im being very thick and ive got myself confused

i know very little about linux and really want to learn a little about linux in general so thought mandriva was a good place to start,

ive downloaded the iso from the web mounted and booted the live cd, and am using it to post now all looking good really happy, on the desktop sure enough as documented the live install button, this is where im having issues.

prior to running the iso, i made under windows xp, (which is what im coming from) using partion magic, a partition 3 gigs big, to which i wanted to install mandriva. this is d: in windows and sda5 in mandriva and is fat32.

    drakx gives me 3 options
erase and use entire disk (this means i loose windows which i dont want)

use the free space on the microsoft partition (dont think this is the one i want either)

custom disk paritioning (think this is the one i want)

    i choose custom disk partioning

    i selected sda5

i clicked on done and got this:
"you must have a root partition.
for this, create a partition (or click on an existing one_
then choose action mount point and set to '/' "

i selected sda5 clicked on mount point

in the where do you want to mount sda5 i put
    /

    it returns
"you need a true filesystem (ext2/ext3,reiserfs, xfs, or jfs) for this mount point

what am i doing wrong im really sorry to ask a silly question but im unsure, all i want to do is dual boot mandriva and my win xp,

    thanks for any help

    Hi and Welcome !

You can't install Linux in FAT32 filesystem.
    Two ways:

    * Format D: drive ( sda5 ) in ext3 filesystem.
    Or
    * Delete D: Drive. Type diskmgmt.msc in RUN dialog box of Windows OS and delete D: Drive through Disk Management Tool. Start Mandriva installation and select Free space. Installer will create and format partition for you.
It is amazing what you can accomplish if you do not care who gets the credit.

    hey

thanks for your help that worked a treat, it installed perfectly and set up the dual boot,

i tested my windows all looks good

booted back into mandriva, it set up my network connection asked me to make a admin password then a user, provided me with a login page, so i logged in, and got the splash screen and nothing,

I then rebooted this time around all i get is a black screeen with a mouse prompt,

i can boot into safe mode fine and get a terminal

im very unsure what to do from here is it worth starting again but i feel the same thing will happen

    thanks for any help

Its a Graphics Card problem. Which Graphics Card do you have?
Boot up in safe mode again and execute this
    Code:
    su
    lspci | grep VGA
    cat /etc/X11/xorg.conf | grep Driver
    Post output here.
    * Its capital X in X11.
