    What is the format of downloaded Pidgin package? .rpm, .deb or .tar.bz2 ??
    You should use Package Manager to install Packages.

    You are using Mandriva, if you have an internet connection you should be able to install it using through the Command Centre or with the following command

    urpmi pidgin
