    what is this sound?

    I recently installed Mandriva 2008 on my Dell Inspiron 1520, and just as the OS started loading I heard some peculiar noise which I couldn't stop. It can be heard all the time while the computer runs Linux. When I try to play some audio file, some notes of the song can be recognized, but the noise is still there. Now I turned off the volume so that I can work without the noise. Any help for the unexperinced user like me?

    At a guess you should open the sound mixer (Kmix in the system tray) and click on the "switches" tab. If the Analogue/digital button is checked try unchecking it.
