    First install (first seven, really)

I haven't installed Linux in about six or eight years, because I don't have the time for this foolishness.

In the past 36 hours, I have installed Fedora three times, and Mandriva at least four. I'm on my third computer, second video card. I've wiped out an XP partition at least five times. I have three installs going on different computers, hoping to luck into a working machine. I'm teaching a Network+ class; not new.

I promise to be mostly civil if somebody could give me a hand.

At this point, I have XP installed, then Mandriva. Trying to start the GUI. Typing "startx" does nothing. Or more precisely, tells me "host name lookup failure." Root or user makes no difference.

How do I start the GUI? Thanks.

My second machine just finished the install. I was certain to tell it to run the GUI automatically, but this machine also starts at a command prompt. On this machine, "xstart" gives "no such file."

Say what you will about Bill Gates, I've installed XP five times tonight, and the most I've needed to do was press the enter key. Maybe I'm asking too much from Fedora, Gentoo, Feather, and Mandriva.

Is there a bug in the 4 gig file I downloaded a few days ago?

I was certain the Mandriva was going to work. It has a very polished look, and the install was pretty well thought out.

Any ideas how to start the GUI? Thanks in advance.

    Execute this
    Code:
    startx
Post exact error message here, if any.
It is amazing what you can accomplish if you do not care who gets the credit.

The other installs on other machines had other errors, such as the "host name lookup failure" above.

    Thanks, Tom
