For the moment I'd suggest an nVidia card. I use an 8600GT which is a mid-range card with great performance. I hear some people are still having occasional problems with setting up 8800s and they also cost a lot more so unless you're going for maximum performance I'd settle for a lower spec.
With regards to ATI, they have always been difficult traditionally though this is due to change as the specs released by AMD are implemented better. The RadeonHD driver is still in its infancy though when it matures I'd expect to see an open source driver for ATI that matches or exceeds the nVidia proprietary driver.
