I'm not sure how to explain this but when I try to change the screen size to 1024x786, the monitor won't re-adjust the screen to fit. Am I missing a driver for linux that does this or what?

if it has not adjusted in /etc/X11/Xorg.conf file's screen section. your screen size changes don't take effect.
