    Evolution is a pretty good desktop app that does just that. You would have to find out the proper mail servers for the specific email you are trying to access, though.

    Personally I use Thunderbird,
    use googlemails imap server.#

    ie imap.googlmail.com
    smtp.googlemail.com

    Any decent email client should be able to do that. Kmail, Thunderbird, Evolution, Zimbra Desktop etc.
