Linux beginner

Im green to this linux system please help me with my problem!!

I cant install any programs, how do i do that?
I have downloaded a program and i followed the instructions to it.
Its a rpm package.
First it came up libdc.so.0 is needed for this program.
Later libcrypto.so.4 and libssl.so.4 is needed.
Always something i have tried many programs but no luck.

Please help, im new to this...

If you're using Mandrake 7 or greater, your best bet is URPMI.
