Install yum which is a program for updating packages painlessly. It is available from several websites like thos of fedora and the yum homepage.
After the installation. type man yum at the command line to learn its usage.

You can also use the Mandrake control centre to update packages. Just choose the control centre (system -->configuration-->Mandrake Control Centre) and then choose software management, next choose updates. If this is the first time it will ask you to choose a ftp site, any will do and then click next. It will download the list and show all updates for your computer depending on the software installation...it will not update tar.gz only rpms. Choose to update bugs, normal fixes or security and click next to the package name to download that update.
Hope this helps
