Need help deciding

Not sure if this is the right place to post this or not but I was really interested in Mandriva after reading a little bit about it. I am fed up with windows and want to try something completely new and different. Which Linux operating system do you guys recommend? I started to install Ubuntu but just wasn't sure. I would like to completely wipe out windows by reformatting my hard drive and start completely over with some type of linux based system. Preferably a free one to start with. Any ideas?

Mandriva's a fine place to start. Ultimately, it's up to personal opinion as to what you like, so I honestly recommend trying a number of different distros and seeing what appeals to you.

Personally, I'm not a fan of Mandriva and I generally point new folks to Linux Mint as a good starting point.
